Many regard through-hole technology as “old technology” and don’t put as much into that side of their process or equipment or training as SMT, test or QC. At PM Assembly, we know that through-hole technology is a permanent part of hybrid assemblies. Almost every assembly we see, quote or build has multiple through-hole components due to the availability, stability or application required. And for some customers, if a product works, why change it? For these reasons, we have 3 distinct processes to install through-hole components: 1) The old-fashioned way- we have on staff many hand soldering operators trained to IPC J-STD-001 solder techniques. We have stations dedicated to lead-free as well as leaded soldering. 2) The other old-fashioned way- we have two wave soldering machines on the floor. On is high-temp (lead-free), and the other is 63/37 tin/lead. 3) The newest way- to enable automation of double-sided hybrid through- hole soldering, we employ a K.I.S.S.-102 selective soldering machine. This machine is capable of soldering with 1 mm of SMT components without disturbing them. It operates within a nitrogen environment to inhibit oxidation and results in beautiful solder joints, whether using the lead-free pot or the tin/lead pot. Custom dedicated nozzles are selected based on the need of the application.
